Editor's note: Iams has since expanded its recall. Click here for an updated story.

Due to salmonella concerns, Procter & Gamble (P&G) is voluntarily recalling a limited number of bags of its Iams Proactive Health Indoor Weight & Hairball Care dry cat food, which according to the company, may have been sold in a couple of stores in Loveland, Colo.

The recalled product comes in blue 6.8-pound bags and features a code date of 02304173 (B1-B6) and the UPC number 1901403921. No other Iams pet food products are affected.

P&G reported that it has worked with retailers to remove the product from stores in Loveland. The company said it believes three bags may have been purchased recently by consumers in the area. No illnesses have been reported.

Pets with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans, according to the company. Cat owners are urged to contact their veterinarian if their pet has consumed the recalled product and is exhibiting these symptoms.

Humans can also become infected, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the cat food or surfaces exposed to the recalled product, according to the company. Symptoms in humans may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever and headache. Children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems are particularly susceptible to infection, according to the company.

Consumers who have purchased Iams Proactive Health Indoor Weight & Hairball Care dry cat food are urged to discard the product and call P&G toll-free at 1-800-862-3332 Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. EST for a product replacement.

Well, I am not surprised that Iams has limited the recall, this coming from a company that does animal testing. I stopped buying their food several years ago when I found out that they allow animal testing and inhumane treatment..then they turn around and say they are trying to make animals health, hey, so they can allow testing.

Don't buy pet food from any of those big, environmentally disastrous corporations--they care nothing about our companion animals or the earth!! Instead feed your furry loved ones food from small earth friendly companies that produce high quality, often organic foods for animals. Your fuzzy babies will be so much healthier and happier! Our pets deserve the best!

Iams and P&G are horrible. They test products on animals and treat the test eaters badly. I can't understand how these people can call themselves pet people. WHen you see a commercial for their products and you see a cat or cats on it you have to wonder how terrified they are because of the terrible treatment. Do not buy this food or any P&G rpoduct. I have 12 cats and have never fed this food. If anyone wants to now what food is good for their cats there are many out there. Purina One, Wellness, Diamond Brand. Just read the backs to see the first ingredient. Which should be a meat product. But DON'T buy Iams for sure. Or anything manufactured by P&G. They are the owrst animal tester on the planet.
