Iams is once again hosting its Home 4 the Holidays dog and cat adoption campaign.

The 13th annual campaign, which runs Oct. 1, 2011, through Jan. 3, 2012, aims to not only raise awareness of the number of dog and cats available for adoption at founding partner Helen Woodward Animal Center and more than 3,500 dog and cat organizations worldwide, but also to provide food to dogs and cats in need.

The goal of this year’s campaign is to place 1.5 million animals in homes. Since it began in 1999, the campaign has contributed to the adoption of 5.8 million cats or dogs, according to Iams.

Through the campaign’s Bags 4 Bowls program, Iams seeks to raise 5 million meals for dogs and cats at adoption and rescue centers. The meal size is based on one feeding for an average size dog or cat.

For every specially marked package of Iams dog or cat food purchased during the campaign, the company has pledged to donate one bowl of food — up to 3 million meals — to a participating animal organization. In addition, Iams has pledged to donate up to 2 million meals for Facebook and other social media activity related to the campaign. For example, Iams has pledged to donate one meal for every Facebook user who “likes” the Iams Facebook page or who creates and shares a special adoption announcement card.

New to the program this year are campaign ambassadors, NASCAR driver Ryan Newman and his wife, Krissie. The Newmans founded the Ryan Newman Foundation to educate and encourage people to spay or neuter their cats and dogs and to adopt cats and dogs from shelters and rescue centers.

“As proud pet parents to five incredible animals, we are honored to join with Iams Home 4 the Holidays to find permanent homes to loving animals,” said Ryan Newman.

“We truly believe that the real reward is when the pet adopts you and we invite everyone to join the millions of families who’ve already experienced the joy of animal adoption through this program,” Krisse Newman added.
