St. Louis-based Nestlé Purina PetCare is accepting nominations through Jan. 15 for its Purina Pets at Work contest, which seeks to honor the nation's most pet-friendly workplace.

Purina, whose pet food brands include Friskies and Beneful, will award $5,000 worth of pet-friendly materials to the winning business and donate $10,000 to a local pet welfare organization. The presenter will be actor John O'Hurley, who discussed the benefits of bringing pets to work while appearing in a video that aired during NBC-TV's broadcast of the “National Dog Show” on Thanksgiving Day.

Employees at Purina's St. Louis campus bring hundreds of dogs and cats to work each week, the company reported.

“I've visited the Purina offices and they clearly believe that spending time with pets can help make life better for pets and pet owners,” O'Hurley said.

A study published in March 2012 in the International Journal of Workplace Health Management found that employees who brought their dog to work tended to have higher job satisfaction and lower stress than workers who left their dogs at home.

Contestants are required to explain how a pet makes a positive impact on their workplace and why their workday is better for them and their pet. They also must describe their employer's Pets at Work program and provide three to five photos that show pets in their workplace.

More information is available here. The winner will be announced in the spring.

I probably would have enjoyed going to work more if I could take my pets to work.

None of the places I've worked at allow pets at work.
