Oda Erstling captured a grand prize in the 2007 Pets and Pals Photo Contest with her photo of Lacey.
Earlier this year, the American Humane Association invited pet lovers and photographers to submit photos of animals interacting with children and adults. The results are in, and the grand prize winners are Roberta Lites of Chandler, Ariz., in the general category, and Oda Erstling of Norwalk, Conn., in the “Shelter Life” category.

Lites captured a shot of a young girl kissing the head of a golden retriever while standing in a patch of sunflowers. Erstling’s photo depicts a young kitten wrapped cozily in her caretaker’s denim shirt while sitting on the woman’s stomach.

Lites and Erstling both received $2,000 and a non-cash prize from American Humane. Other winners each received $500 and a non-cash prize. Those winners included:

  • Leslie Morris of Sacramento, Calif., in the “Down on the Farm” category
  • Sumner W. Fowler of Novato, Calif., in the “Shelter Life” category
  • Terry Curtiss of Sun City, Calif., in the “Best Pals” category
  • Dara Jayne Ortman of Moody, Texas, in the “Families and Pets” category
