Nearly one-third of dog owners, including 37 percent of women dog owners and 41 percent of dog owners aged 18 to 34, have selected home dcor items with their pets in mind, according to a recent survey by Purina Little Bites Indoor Complete dog food and Ipsos Public Affairs.
Decorating for dogs largely focused on practicality. Indeed, if money were not an issue, 75 percent of dog owners said they would install easy-to-clean and stain resistant flooring and 63 percent said they would buy furniture that resists shedding, stains and tears.
Three of four dog owners also said they would treat their dogs to new beds, toy boxes or feeding stations.
Whitman says that short of a complete makeover, dog owners can do much to make their home more dog friendly.
Among her tips:
1) Consider low-pile flooring or easy-to-clean area rugs over wall-to-wall carpeting.
2) Seal hardwood floors with polyurethane to help prevent urine odor retention.
3) Hard surfaces such as ceramic tile or vinyl are the best option for pet feeding areas to keep floors tidy. A doggie placemat will also help keep floors clean.
4) In rooms where the pet spends a lot of time, choose furniture without skirts or ruffles, which can trap pet hair. Likewise, blinds and shades may be better options than heavy drapes.
5) Choose washable paint with a satin finish instead of a flat paint to keep walls looking fresh and clean.
