Starting at 9 a.m. on May 6, New York-based North Shore Animal League America will open its doors for a 36-hour adoption event. The League will have over 700 puppies, kittens, dogs and cats available for adoption at its Port Washington headquarters.
The Adoptathon, an annual event of North Shore Animal League America, will bring together shelters in all 50 states and every time zone around the world to find homes for cats and dogs, and promote the importance of adopting a shelter pet.
Shelters in the Fiji Islands, Finland, Bolivia, Hong Kong, Romania, Turkey, India, Canada, Nigeria, Lithuania, South Africa and Australia will participate.
In 1995, Pet Adoptathon began as a North Shore Animal League adoption weekend, with the goal of finding homes for each and every dog and cat at the League. That weekend, over 500 needy pets found homes.
Ever since, the League has invited shelters around the world to participate in Pet Adoptathon. Last year, close to 1,000 shelters participated, including organizations in all fifty states and over 23 countries worldwide with at least one shelter in each time zone. To date, Pet Adoptathon has fostered over 229,000 adoptions worldwide.
Performances by the Purina Incredible Dog Team, face painting, raffles, a spring plant sale and free gifts from Pet Adoptathon sponsors will highlight the event. Experts and authors will be available to answer questions about adoption, training, healthcare, nutrition and more.
This years Adoptathon is sponsored by Purina, Bayer Animal Health, Fort Dodge Animal Health and Nylabone Products.
