Car owners in Florida can show their support for their feline and canine friends by ordering the Florida Animal Friend specialty license plate, made possible by legislation approved in 2004. Proceeds from the license plate will fund spay and neuter initiatives in the state. Such initiatives will include animal overpopulation education and spay/neuter education.
The Animal Friend license plate costs an additional $25 when registering an automobile, plus a $2 service fee when buying an annual vehicle license. Personalizing the plate with special words or numbers costs an additional $12. The license plate is available for purchase at any county license tag office. So far, more than 6,000 Florida residents have ordered the special license plate, generating more than $167,000 in registration fees.
The specialty license plate is offered through the Animal Friend Coalition, comprised of animal care groups including the Florida Animal Control Association, the Florida Veterinary Medical Association and the Humane Society of the United States, as well as several individuals.
