A group of animal lovers recently gathered in Shepherdsville, Ky., this week to voice their complaints about alleged dirty and dangerous conditions at the Bullitt County Animal Shelter.
At the Wednesday, June 28 meeting, area residents also criticized what they say is the countys greater focus on euthanizations than finding homes for animals.
Management of the shelter reverted back to the county in April when the organization that formerly ran the shelter, Bullitt County Animal Rescue, discontinued its work because the countys $50,000 annual funding wasn't enough to pay the bills.
Now, with the county back in control, animal advocates say they're concerned conditions will deteriorate further. When the county last held control of the shelter in 2004, animal activists at the meeting said, the shelter was found covered in feces, had small wooden cages and dead animals were piled up behind the shelter.
The county is in negotiations with the Kentucky Humane Society to operate the shelter.
