A Humane Society Silicon Valley documentary on homeless cats in northern Californias Santa Clara County will air on two Bay Area television stations this month.
The film, Cats Without a Home, will be shown on KTEH Public Television Monday, July 17 at 10:30 p.m. NBC11 will air the film Saturday, July 29 at 11:30 a.m., Sunday, July 30 at 10:30 a.m. and Saturday, Aug. 5 at 11 a.m.
The 30-minute documentary, shot over an eight-month period, tells the plight of homeless cats in Santa Clara County by following six individuals who are committed to reducing the unnecessary euthanasia of homeless cats.
A trailer of the film can be accessed at www.catswithoutahome.com.
Humane Society Silicon Valley President Christine Benninger said an estimated 125,000 homeless cats roam Silicon Valley streets and that cats comprise roughly two-thirds of the animals brought to local shelters and are euthanized at a far greater rate than dogs.
This is because, she said, a majority of them are feral, too young or too sick to be adopted. In Santa Clara County alone, Benninger says approximately 14,000 of these cats are euthanized each year at a cost of $2.4 million.
Benninger hopes the film will inspire people to become involved with saving more cats through the non-lethal trap, neuter and return technique. Benninger says TNR saves money, noting that it costs cities approximately $250 to pick up, house and euthanize one homeless cat. For the same price, five cats can be spayed or neutered.
