APSCA Internships

Applied Animal Behavior Internships Available

The two year-long internships are to conduct research at shelters.

The ASPCA is offering two year-long internships for animal science graduate students to work full-time in animal shelters and conduct research related to a program that improves the shelter experience for animals.

The ASPCA’s “Meet Your Match” program, which is used in shelters across the United States, uses behavior assessments to predict how a shelter cat, dog or puppy may behave in his or her new home for the first several weeks.

The assessments are used with surveys to match adopters to appropriate animals.

The “Meet Your Match” internships are intended for full-time graduate students in animal behavior programs who are:

  • Interested in obtaining hands-on research experience in applied settings.
  • Enrolled as a full-time master’s or doctoral student and obtaining full course credit for the internship.
  • Willing to relocate for one year – from August 2007 to July 2008 – to the community where the assigned shelter is located.

To apply, send a C.V. and two reference letters to: Emily Weiss, Ph.D., C.A.A.B., Sr. Director of Shelter Behavior Programs ASPCA, 2672 SW Indianola, Benton, KS 67017. For more information, Weiss can be reached at (316) 778-1273 or e-mailed at emilyw@aspca.org.

I agree with Laura! I am also interested in "companion" animal behavior, but not wanting to do a DVM program either. Hopefully, something will change in academia and we will be able to devote our time and energy to this subject.

"SOUNDS" great would be the key part of that sentence, I search high and low and all over for "applied Animal Behavior" graduate programs that specifically address the issues in shelters and the behavior stereotypies of companion animals. However, most of these programs only care about the farm animals or the students who also are in a veterinary program. Its extremely unfortunate that the companion sector of the animal population that interacts with humans is so neglected academically and scientifically speaking. Theres too much anecdotal information out there and no academic program not part of a DVM exists that I can find. ITS TIME Real scientific research was completed for our companion animals for those who dont want to be a veterinarian. Where to go, no schools have any programs. Google scholar searches only return results for research with companion animals when the faculty are part of a vet school DVM type program. I'm not interested in a DVM and want to dedicate my life to "Applied" "Companion" animal research, and absolutely love doing research and variable manipulations. WHO KNOWS WHERE I CAN FIND A FACULTY FOR A GRAD PROGRAM WILLING TO TAKE ME WITH TOPICS IN DOG and CAT APPLIED BEHAVIOR RESEARCH?
