| Being prepared for a disaster can help save the life of your cat. |
Recent tornadoes in the Midwest remind us that severe summer weather patterns can threaten humans and animals alike. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals reminds pet owners to prepare for hurricanes, tornadoes and other intense storms.
“Before tragedy strikes, we urge all Americans, including those with pets, to have an emergency plan in place,” said Ed Sayres, ASPCA president and CEO. “Preparing your family for a disaster will not only save the life of you and your loved ones, but it will also ease the anxiety in its aftermath.”
The ASPCA offers these tips to help prepare for weather-related emergencies:
- Bring your pets inside during storm warnings, and make sure they have plenty of food and water.
- In the event of evacuation, make sure you have made arrangements for your pets. Do not leave your pets behind when you evacuate. Make sure you know where you can bring your pets before disaster strikes.
- Keep emergency pet supplies and travel kits handy. Make sure everyone in the family knows where they are kept.
- Place a “rescue alert” sticker in a front window so rescue workers will know there is a pet in the house.
- Make arrangements with a designated caregiver who can care for your pets in the event you cannot.
