Visitors strolled through the grounds of the Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue and Educational Center in Rock Springs for the first time this past weekend, as the sanctuary opened its doors to the public.

Founder Jeff Kozlowski and volunteers led tours through the refuge, showing off a Bengal tiger, a black leopard and a pair of lions, among other animals, the Baraboo News Republic reports.

The sanctuary is the result of Kozlowski’s efforts to meet zoning regulations and rules for operation for the center. Two years ago, Kozlowski butted heads with neighbors and county officials because of the big cats he kept on his land east of Rock Springs. He worked with the Village Board to meet all rules governing exotic animals.

Now, large pens house several big cats including Isis, a white Bengal tiger; Dozer, a black leopard; and Pebbles and Bam Bam, sibling lions. Many of the animals came to Kozlowski from owners who mistreated them or decided they could no longer care for them. The new sanctuary gives the big cats a comfortable home.

“The animals are happy, they’re in a safe area,” Kozlowski said. “Everybody’s getting along.”

Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue and Educational Center is open to the public. Admission is $8 for adults, $4 for children and $3 for children and chaperones in school groups. For more information, visit the sanctuary’s website.

My husband our 2 grandchildren & I went to visit these beautiful cats today & this place is amazing. I am already wanting to go back to visit. The grounds & the cats are very well kept up. The cats however wern't very active because we were dealing with 92 degree temps so they were in the shade can't say I don't blame them. The price is right just think what it takes Jeff & Jenny to feed these cats daily $$$$$$ so I don't think $9.00 donation fee is bad at all.... Beautiful place I hope you can stop by & see this amazing place..... Keep up the GREAT work Jeff & Jenny

This is a great place! It it so much nicer than going to a zoo. The people who run this take great care of the cats and treat them with respect and kindness. I cant say enough about how wonderful the Big Cat Refuge is. Please go and donate anything you can to help.

Koz went to my high school. Decent guy, but could never run as fast as I could. He had the coolest car and liked fat chicks like Chara Whitrock.

Pay no attention to Melody. She obviously is not well educated on Big Cats or what the rules and regulations are for such a facility. I fell sorry that she does not educate her self more or she would realize what a fantastic and well run facility this place is. It has been consistantly inspected, and applauded over and over again is one of the finest programs for Big Cat Rescue in the Nation. Having spent a lot of time there and many years working with agencies that help and create such facilities, I can assure you that Jeff and his cats are some of the most well cared for, and healtiest animals around. Do you know he has to turn away over 50 big cats a month because he does not have enough room for them all? I strongly encourage everyone to visit and learn what goes on there. He is doing a fantastic job and has been recognized by many professional vets, state and federal agencies as well.
