Dearborn (Michigan) Animal Shelter experienced an increase in cats turned in to the shelter this summer, so in response, the Friends for the Dearborn Animal Shelter rented a trailer and converted it into a Cat Community Center (CCC). Staff and volunteers hope to encourage more cat adoptions by creating an inviting atmosphere for potential adopters and the cats that need new homes.
In the new CCC, up to 15 cats can live cage-free and socialize with each other. Shelter staff members say that this socialization and higher quality of living improve the cats’ adoption rates. The program already has proved successful and more than 18 cats were adopted since the CCC was created.
One particularly heartwarming adoption story involves Mona and Sissy, two cats who had been waiting for homes for more than three years. The cats were two of the first to move into the CCC, and were adopted together by April Cronin, a local Dearborn resident. Cronin said she was impressed by the CCC. “Because of this care, these two loving and trusting cats made a smooth transition into my home, into my family,” she said.
