Ten Most Popular Cat Names Revealed

Max tops the list once again; Princess, Sophie and Bella Make Their Debut

Max tops the list for the 5th year in a row in popularity for cats and dogs
Max, Chloe and Lucy are the three most popular cat names, based on pet insurance company's roster of 450,000 pets.
Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) recently analyzed the names of its 450,000 insured pets and revealed their most popular cat names.  Rounding out the top ten are:

1. Max
2. Chloe
3. Lucy
4. Tigger
5. Tiger
6. Smokey
7. Oliver
8. Bella
9. Sophie
10. Princess

Max tops the list for the fifth year in a row (for both cats and dogs), according to VPI.

“The continuing popularity of Max is largely due to the fact that it is monosyllabic and simple for people and pets to remember,” said Dr. Carol McConnell, vice president and chief veterinary officer for VPI, “yet easy to distinguish from common commands.”

A few of the names (or slight variations thereof) are popular baby names as well. The Social Security Administration reports that Isabella (Bella) is the fourth most popular name for girls, and Sophia places ninth.

“When people consider their pet an integral part of the family, they are more inclined to choose a human name for it,” McConnnell explained. “The prevalence of pets with human names clearly reflects the growing human-animal bond.”

A few names made their debut on this year’s list. Princess, Sophie and Bella were added while Simba, Angel and Shadow fell from the top 10.

My kitty's name is Boho because she's 'bohemian'. Basically, she likes to eat, sleep and poop and that's pretty bohemian.

I have never used these names. I like different. Mine are Ms. Howie, Teddy Bear and Joey. I had a JonTom and a Mewsette that are now passed.

Interesting! I lost my two kitties, Max and Oliver, in the last two years. Talk about no imagination, both names are in the top ten. I still prefer people names to others. What I did was make a list of names that I liked and then threw each one at the cat as it walked by. The one that stuck was given to the cat. I wanted to name one of them Dudley (for Dudley Moore), but it just didn't fit either cat. Max was an all-American bruiser of a cat and Max was the right name for him. Oliver was soft and cuddly and the name was perfect for him. You have to give your cats names that take some thought.
