Take Your Cat on Vacation

Jack Hanna provides tips for pet owners that wish to travel with their animals.
As you make travel plans for your summer vacation, consider including your cat. Jack Hanna, spokesperson for Motel 6, shares ways all pet owners can include their animals while keeping the vacation safe and fun for everyone.

Before you even leave the house, research your options, Hanna says. When planning a travel route, be sure to schedule time for rest stops and bathroom breaks. Look for places along your route where you can enjoy activities with your animals, Hanna recommends.

Also research your hotel options, looking for pet-friendly chains and establishments. Book your accommodations well in advance, Hanna suggests. No matter what you read online or in a travel guide, always ask the booking agent if the hotel does indeed accept pets and if there is an extra fee for pets. Consider asking for a first-floor room with convenient access to your car to ease transport of your pet to and from the room.

Once you’ve established your itinerary, you can begin packing for your cat. Make sure you have current copies of your cat’s vaccination records, rabies tags, and prescriptions for any medications your cat needs, Hanna says. Inspect your cat’s crate for damage and clean it thoroughly. If your cat is used to regular grooming and bathing, give it a bath right before you embark on your journey.

Pack your cat’s regular food and plan to feed him at his regular mealtimes, regardless of where you are on the road. Bring plenty of fresh water, too. Be sure to bring a small litterbox and the litter your cat prefers, as well as familiar toys and a cat bed. Fit your cat with a collar and identification tag, and consider keeping him on a leash and harness during all rest stops to prevent accidental escapes.

Most of all, carefully evaluate your cat’s readiness to accompany you on vacation. An easy-going, friendly cat may adapt more easily to life on the road than a shy, easily frightened pet.

We always travel with our cat (and two dogs and three children). She's happiest when allowed to roam free. She usually settles under the drivers seat, so I put a little bowl of water under there. She comes out at breaks for snacks and we put her on a leash and harness when she stretches her legs at rest stops. At the destination she settles down quickly and is happy to be with her people. The one time we left her home and had the neighbor care for her she was visibly upset for months. We won't go anywhere without her now. Last summer we went to a family reunion. My mother in law booked the house which did not allow pets. So we took them all and kenneled them nearby. We visited them everyday. None of them displayed any adjustment problems.

We've taken two of our three cats to the cottage for the week-end. The third one stayed home because she doesn't travel well. If they are kept in a carrier, they cry the whole way, so I got some contraption (seat belt) that clips on their harness and the other end fits in the seat belt clip of the car or truck, so they can ride in their own seat and won't run around the car and endanger themselves and other passengers. We also took four kids with us, so we went with two vehicles. My boyfriend took two boys and Kiki in his truck. She rode in the front passenger seat, and somtimes on the console so she could watch outside. I took two girls in my car and Sadie rode between them clipped in the middle seatbelt clip so they could pet her and reassure her. It was her first long trip.

Great article. I have a Maine Coon and she travels great. Doesn't mind a hotel. I feel confident that if I had to be away from home with her for a period of time, she would be fine. As for vacations, she prefers to stay home with grandma who spoils her almost as much as I do!
