The Humane Society of Lake County in Winter Garden, Fla., is helping animals affected by the tornadoes that struck Lake, Seminole, Cumter and Volusia counties in Florida last Friday, Feb. 2. Shelter workers are compiling the names of foster caregivers willing to help pets displaced by the severe storms, and a board member has offered a spot on her property to be used as a temporary triage center, according to Best Friends Animal Society.
An animal investigator from the Humane Society of Lake County has traveled to Lady Lake, one of the areas most affected by the tornadoes, to assess the needs of animals and offer the shelter’s services. In Sarasota, Fla., seven veterinarians have volunteered their services to help animals injured by the storms. Other groups providing aid include Brittany Rescue and Rehab, Have a Heart for Companion Animals and Pet Lovers Rescue.
Already, reports of pets reuniting with their owners are reaching the media, including a touching story of an elderly man finding his dog that ran away when the tornadoes hit.
