The recent heavy rains that caused severe flooding in Johor, the southernmost state in Malaysia, have displaced more than 100,000 people. Also displaced by the rising floodwaters are thousands of pets that were abandoned when people were forced to leave
their homes.
Noah’s Ark Natural Animal Sanctuary in Johor is working with other animal welfare personnel to help the cats and dogs affected by the floods. Shelter workers have rescued nearly 200 cats and dogs found roaming the streets. The rescued animals have found shelter at Noah’s Ark, according to shelter spokeswoman Lynda Goh, and several owners have already contacted the shelter, seeking their lost pets.
At one point, water from the floods reached as high as 13 feet, cutting off access to many towns and villages. As the flood waters recede, many residents are returning to their homes. Noah’s Ark hopes to reunite many of these residents with their lost pets.
