FLOCK Cat Shelter

125 Cats Rescued From Home

Former manager of the FLOCK cat shelter in Pahrump, Nev., arrested on charges of animal neglect.

Shari Allen, the former director of FLOCK (For the Love of Cats and Kittens) in Pahrump, Nev., was arrested and charged last week with 125 counts of animal neglect. The Nye County animal shelter took possession of 125 cats found in Allen’s home and is caring for them at the county shelter.

Volunteers and staff members from Best Friends Animal Society are assisting Nye County shelter officials in caring for the cats. Russ Mead, legal counsel for Best Friends, says the cats show signs of neglect, including upper respiratory conditions, ringworm and malnutrition.

Nye County officials emphasized that Allen’s arrest is separate from the ongoing investigation of conditions at the FLOCK facility in Pahrump. Allen was replaced as director of FLOCK in March of this year.

My first volunteer "job" was through Best Friends helping out at their adoption events for the FLOCK cats last summer. I drove out to Pahrump to pick up some of the kitties and bring them to Las Vegas for these events, and couldn't believe how disgusting the sanctuary was (there were 800+ cats/kittens in all). I'd never in my life seen so many people willing to give their time to make sure these cats went to loving homes. Additionally, there were so many caring, lovely people coming out of the woodwork in Las Vegas ready to adopt these cats!

Best Friends had allowed me to foster 2 very sick kittens from FLOCK. After many vet visits, they were running and playing like kittens should be!

This FLOCK mess also started me on my way to fostering kittens for a group called Homeward Bound Cat Adoptions, here in Las Vegas.

Fostering, while lots of work, is the best thing anyone can do to give an animal a chance at a good life!

The saddest thing about this article is it puts a poor light on other volunteers who work in shelters across the country, and undeservedly so. Many volunteers place caring for the cats before family and themselves. One person shouldn't be considered the example for all.

I just cannot understand how people can mistreat their pets. It is a blesing that there are people out there like Best Friends Animal Society. Keep up the great job.

It makes me sick to read about this type of neglect. I hope this person gets what she deserves! How can people do this?
