Gulf Coast States Receive Funds to Curb Pet Overpopulation

More than $850,000 in grant funding will be distributed to animal shelters throughout Louisiana and Mississippi.

Maddie’s Fund and The Humane Society of the United States are giving $852,000 in grant funding to 54 animal shelters throughout Louisiana and Mississippi to help reduce pet overpopulation.

Grants of up to $20,000 will be given to organizations that have agreed to track and share animal intake and outcome figures for the years 2005-2010. Shelters plan to use the funds on capacity-building, low-cost spay/neuter programs, new equipment for surgical suites, better disease control systems and building improvements.

The project, named “After Katrina: Improving the Lives of Gulf Coast Dogs & Cats,” lays the groundwork for an anticipated $2 million, two-state marketing campaign to encourage pet owners in Louisiana and Mississippi to spay and neuter their pets.
