HSUS Creates Foreclosure Pets Grant Program

Animal welfare organizations can apply for grants from the Humane Society of the United States.

The Humane Society of the United States has established a fund to address the hardships that the current economic downturn has visited on cats and other pets.

The HSUS will administer grants from the Foreclosure Pets Fund to animal shelters, rescue groups, and animal control agencies to help establish and expand existing programs that assist families in caring for their pets during financial hardship. Grants range in size from $500 to $2,000.

“With more and more individuals and families facing an uncertain financial future, shelters and rescue groups have their own struggle to respond to the rise in animals being brought to their doors and people seeking help from them in other ways,” said Stephanie Shain, director of outreach for companion animals at The HSUS. “This grant program will help those organizations help more people and pets in their communities.”

With shelters filling up due to people losing their homes to foreclosure, and no-pets rental housing being the only option in some cases, this looks like a step in the right direction. If it means facilities expansion so the number of pets that need to be re-homed or fostered is increased, so much the better. The alternative is to put healthy, loving pets to sleep, which none of us wants. If you've read the piece, "How Could You?" by Jim Willis, you know how wrong it is to treat a pet as if it were disposable. As it says in the piece, what lesson are you teaching your children by giving up a pet just because you didn't try hard enough to find pet-friendly housing? We need to educate and encourage landlords to accept more pets. Yes, I realize there are some tenants who shouldn't be pet owners, and especially renters, but there are some things in life that you have to accept. If a tenant wrecks an apartment, charge them for the damages. If they neglect their pet, seize the pet. The pet deserves better. But we have to work at solving the problem on all sides in order to have success.

I think this is good as the shelters and others can help save more pets this way.

This is a WONDERFUL thing. It is very sad to see families lose their pet because of loss of money.
