Cat-Related Flight Incident

Feds Release Flight-Related Cat
Incident Data

A cat was found deceased after a flight from Los Angeles to Chicago.

One cat-related incident occurred on an American domestic flight in November when a pet cat was found dead, according to a U.S. Department of Transportation report released Jan. 3.

In the incident, a 14-year-old cat was found dead in its kennel upon arrival of a United Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Chicago,
Nov. 14.

“The owner shared that she was not surprised, as (a) veterinarian had advised her that the cat may not survive due to age and recent surgical procedures the cat had undergone,” according to United Air’s incident report.

The report also stated that the airline found that all its standard procedures had been followed; therefore no corrective measures
were taken.

From January through November of 2006, there was a total of 25 animal fatalities — mostly dogs — before, during or after air transport, according to Department of Transportation statistics.

Nine animals were injured and eight animals were lost at United States airports, according to the data.

This is the reason I won't fly my animals. I don't trust what the carriers do.

Why in the world would any "loving" pet owner let a cat that old and ill be shipped in the belly of a plane when the vet advised against it. surely other arangements could have been made if transportaion were so important to her.

In my opinion I don't believe people realize that
pets are a part of one's family, and should be
treated with the same protection as any other living being even if they aren't of the same species. All living things feel pain, fear, love,
joy, etc., and it's the responsibility of humans
to realize that..honor and protect those that can't protect themselves.

But when you consider the lax of protection we offer children today, it just is an offshoot of
that lack of decency and concern that is shown
towards our pets.

I feel that if a pet has to travel, that a separate
compartment in the plane and not in the luggage hold should be provided at a cost. I doubt that
anyone making the decisions in the airlines re-
garding pets would like to be put in the luggage
hold.

In my hundreds of flights through the years, I have
found that most children seated in the plane has
behaved much worse than any cat or dog I've ever
seen...and we don't put them in the belly of the
aircraft.
