Indiana wildlife officials are trying to recapture a 75-pound missing cougar that has been loose for days after it escaped its pen at a rescue center about 50 miles west of Indianapolis.
The female cougar named Donner escaped the Exotic Feline Rescue Center east of Terre Haute, Ind., Jan. 5, by scaling a 14-foot high fence.
State conservation officer Max Winchell has said Donner still might be on the preserve’s grounds because tracks and the remains of two dead raccoons have been found in the area.
Attempts to track and tranquilize the missing cougar have been unsuccessful thus far.
Donner and her brother, Boomer, have lived at the center since December 1999. They were born in Montana and captured after their mother died. Donner’s believed to be about 8 or 9 years old.
The preserve houses about 200 exotic cats, including leopards, lions and tigers, on more than 100 acres.
Police have asked the public not to go to the area near the rescue center to see or capture Donner.
