Journalist Finds New Talent after Adopting Pet
Photographer Sandra Bolan captures who really rules the house in her new book, “Moms and Paws: An Intimate Look at Women and Their Best Friends.”
When photographer and writer Sandra Bolan adopted her first dog six years ago, not only did the dynamics of her household change, but so did her career path.

Like many new pet parents, Bolan snapped countless pictures of her new canine. However, Bolan’s pet photography soon turned into more than a pet project as she realized she had a talent for pet photography.

“I’m a journalist by trade,” Bolan said. “I’ve always written and photographed for newspaper work. I found out I had a knack for [pet photography] and I started doing it with friends’ pets, and it kept going from there. It’s been building and building.”

The growth resulted in two published books. Her most recent, “Moms and Paws: An Intimate Look at Women and Their Best Friends,” was released in July.

The book displays approximately 100 photos of women with cats, dogs and horses, along with quotes from the women that encompass their pets’ personalities as captured in the photos.

“I focus on the cat or dog and let it do what it does,” Bolan says of her process. “I just observe and let the owner talk about their quirks, and I observe their quirks and capture their personality that way. Every animal presents its own new challenge.”

After adopting her first dog, Wally, Bolan added two more pets to her clan — a cat, Flintstone, and another dog, Alvin.

Bolan added that she’s unsure where her work will take her, but she knows she’ll continue to illuminate pets through her photography.

“I think everyone should find their niche,” she explained. “I understand animals.”

Bolan’s book is available for purchase on her website and  Amazon.com.

Sounds like a great "girlfriends" Christmas gift. What a handy idea.
