Morris Animal Foundation Commits $10 Million for Research

The money will be used to improve the health and welfare of cats as well as other companion animals and wildlife.

The Morris Animal Foundation commited $10 million to fund research of animals and wildlife
Morris Animal Foundation will fund $10 million in animal health studies over the next three years; 17 of these studies will focus on cat health issues, including asthma, cancer, kidney diseases and obesity.
Morris Animal Foundation, a nonprofit organization that funds research projects benefiting companion animals and wildlife, will fund more than $4.6 million in animal health studies for 2008 and will continue to support these studies in the amount of $10 million as they continue over the next three years.

The funds will aid 17 feline health research studies focusing on issues including asthma, cancer, kidney diseases and obesity. Funds also will be allocated to 43 canine health studies, 11 equine studies and 36 wildlife health studies.

In addition, MAF is supporting 30 Veterinary Student Scholars who are conducting short-term health study projects at universities worldwide. The program was designed to give veterinary students an opportunity to work with a mentor on research projects early in their careers to encourage them to consider a career in veterinary research.

Pet owners, animal lovers and veterinarians can sponsor or co-sponsor a study with a total gift of $3,000 or more per study. The veterinary student projects also can be sponsored.

For more information, call 800-243-2345, e-mail MAF or visit the foundation’s website.

Great that they're funding some cat research, but aren't there more cats kept as pets than dogs in the U.S.? And yet they're funding only 17 cat studies compared to 43 dog ones. Hmmmm... Someone commented at a veterinary conference this past summer that if FIP were a disease in dogs its cure would have been found long ago. Sounds like the trend continues.

That is so wonderful for what the animal foundation will be contributing to. I hope more groups like them would sponsor more animal research so that some diseases can have better treatments.
