On Oct. 22, pet lovers will gather for a walk-a-thon and day of pet-related events at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront for the Virginia Beach SPCA’s 28th annual Walk for the Animals. Walkers will meet at the 24th St. Park. Registration begins at 11 a.m., and the walk commences at 1 p.m.

Registration for each walker is $10; that cost includes an event T-shirt, lunch and goodie bag. Incentive prizes will be given to registered walkers who raise $100, $250, $500 or $1,000. The top individual fundraiser will receive two AirTran airline tickets to anywhere AirTran flies.

The day will include family-oriented events for owners and their pets. Children and pets are encouraged to come in Halloween costumes to participate in the costume contest. Awards will be given for different age groups, with a special award bestowed on the most creative pet-owner costume.

In addition, awards will be given in an owner/pet look-alike contest. Owners may bring a photo of their pet if the animal is unable to attend the event. Other activities include bobbing for hot dogs and a competition for the best pet trick.

The Virginia Beach SPCA will also hold a microchip clinic at the event. Pet owners can have their pets microchipped and registered for $25. For more information about the event or to register, visit the Virginia Beach SPCA website.
