| Once a neglected resident at FLOCK, Tom Thumb now has a new home with Jill Murphy. |
In mid-July, Nye County animal control officials seized control of FLOCK (For the Love of Cats and Kittens) cat rescue facility, as the more than 400 cats living there were being severely neglected. This past weekend, 41 of those cats were placed in new homes, thanks to the generosity of the Pahrump Nugget Hotel & Casino and the efforts of volunteers and staff from Best Friends Animal Society.
The event, held Aug. 11, was a rousing success, according to Danielle Aymar, Best Friends adoption manager. “We were busy before the doors opened,” she said. “The cats were awesome, and the volunteers were amazing!”
The first cat was adopted even before the event was scheduled to begin, Aymar said. Jackie Davoren and her daughters, Kamber and Jordan, drove up from Las Vegas to find a female cat to live with their two existing cats. “We were willing to sit outside for two hours,” Davoren said. “We wanted to help out, and we wanted the best of the best cat.”
Best Friends brought 50 of the more than 400 cats at the FLOCK facility to the event, and were thrilled to place 41 in new homes. Even hard-to-place cats found new homes, including Tom Thumb. Tom needed a home where he would be the only cat, and he found it with Jill Murphy.
“I read in the paper about the event, and I like cats, so I thought I might find one to take home,” Murphy said. “I went up to many cats here. Some ignored me, and one even hissed at me. But as soon as I went up to Tom, he started head-butting me.”
In addition to finding homes for 41 cats, Best Friends staff collected more than $900 in donations from concerned pet lovers. “I’m speechless,” Aymar said.
