Best Friends Animal Society plans to help animals affected by the recent earthquake in Peru.
Over the next eight weeks, animals affected by the devastating earthquake that hit Peru in August will receive care, vaccinations, food and spay/neuter surgeries from Best Friends Animal Society and local animal welfare groups.

Local government officials in western Peru recently approved a plan proposed by Best Friends Animal Society. Best Friends will implement the plan, which calls for more than 1,000 spay/neuter surgeries, 1,800 vaccinations and the distribution of 15 tons of pet food. The plan will help the more than 3,500 animals estimated to be affected by the earthquake.

Staff members from Best Friends will work with local health departments, animal welfare organizations and veterinarians in the province of Ica, as well as in Chincha and Pisco. Two of the main goals are to vaccinate stray dogs and cats against rabies, and to spay or neuter up to 1,000 animals to help control the stray animal population.

Best Friends Animal Society is gathering supplies, hiring staff and recruiting volunteers for the major Peruvian project. Staff members already present in Peru are working with the Peruvian Association for the Protection of Animals to hire veterinarians and veterinary technicians, as well as finding an appropriate location to administer veterinary services.
