San Diego animal shelters share a common goal in working to “save the lives of all healthy and treatable companion animals,” according to the newly formed San Diego Animal Welfare Coalition. Under the umbrella of the new coalition, eight San Diego area shelters will work together to further that goal.

The coalition members already have a good working relationship. Through collaboration, none of the coalition shelters have had to euthanize a healthy animal since October 2006, the SDAWC said. The formation of the coalition will serve to strengthen that working relationship, allowing the shelters to develop a safety net for healthy, homeless companion animals.

“Now that we are utilizing each other as a resource, we are working toward the day when none of the shelters in the county will euthanize for treatable conditions, which is an important goal for the coalition,” said Dawn Danielson, director of the County of San Diego Department of Animal Services, one of the coalition members.

The other animal welfare organizations joining together are:

  • Chula Vista Animal Care Facility
  • El Cajon Animal Shelter
  • Escondido Animal Shelter
  • Helen Woodward Animal Center
  • North County Humane Society and SPCA
  • Rancho Coastal Humane Society
  • San Diego Humane Society and SPCA
