In an effort to address pet overpopulation, New Mexico has earmarked $400,000 for Spay New Mexico, a program that will provide free spay or neuter surgeries to low-income families during the month of June. New Mexico residents can apply for the program by calling (800) 248-SPAY.

The program was made possible through the work of animal protection volunteers, the New Mexico House of Representatives and Governor Bill Richardson. Saving Animals Across Borders was enlisted to implement the program, with funding coordinated through the Summerlee Foundation. All calls about the program are being routed through the SpayUSA toll-free number. The surgeries will be performed at The Pet Hospital locations in New Mexico as well as through the Santa Fe Animal Shelter’s mobile spay and neuter clinic.

“I’m very proud of the program and excited about the launch of Spay New Mexico to address animal overpopulation,” said New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson.

MORE STATES NEED TO DO THIS, TO REDUCE THE OVERWHELMING POPULATION. MY RESCUE GROUP HAS A PHENOMENAL AMOUNT OF KITTENS THIS YEAR, AND WE ARE HAVING TO TURN AWAY MOST ADULT CATS. IF EVERYONE GOT THEIR CATS SPAYED AND DID NOT DISCARD THEM OUTSIDE LIKE TRASH, WE WOULD NOT HAVE ALL THESE CATS TO FIND HOMES FOR.
