I was reading the comments at the end of the article, and I noticed that there was one area nobody touched on: unemployment. I have been unemployed for two years, and where I live, older workers have almost no chance of getting a job. I live with my retired mother, due to an eviction, because, again, unemployment. I've gone through my savings, my 401k, and exhausted my unemployment benefits. I have a cat that is my best buddy, and not all apartments allow pets. The last apartment we were in didn't allow pets, and it was a royal pain to keep my cat hidden. Unfortunately, the less expensive apartments tend to be no-pets. People are losing jobs left and right because of companies sending jobs overseas, and the only ones getting jobs are the kids because they're cheaper. If you do manage to get a job if you're over 35, it's usually part-time at minimum wage. And if you keep it for more than a year or two, you're lucky. Even then, chances are your boss and/or co-workers will treat you like trash and look for ways to get rid of you. I have a monthly blog, http://www.myspace.com/cataholic1 , where I address pet-related issues. My main focus is increasing the number of pet-friendly rentals.
But if you need proof that companies are getting greedy, look at the statement in the article where it says a dog food company shrank the package but kept the price the same. Yes, I'm aware of the rise in the price of gas and grains being used for biofuel, but if you look at the oil industry, the price of a barrel of oil can drop, but the oil companies keep raising their prices. What's wrong with this picture?
