Pet Shop Owner Pleads No Contest to Animal Cruelty
A Lynwood, Calif., pet shop owner charged last year with abusing cats, dogs and other animals — some smothered to death or left to die in trash bins — pleaded no contest Wednesday to animal cruelty charges and could be sentenced to as many as six years in prison, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Somehow a 10-pound, black-and-white cat was able to escape its carrier and hide in the Tampa, Fla., International Airport. An animal officer managed to get a handle on the angry cat. Nina was ornery after not eating, getting wet and roaming the airport, MSNBC reports.

It was the stereotypical firefighters-try-to-rescue-cat story, but with a twist. Firefighters from the city of Weston spent a sopping hour in pouring rain Tuesday trying to extract a kitten squeezed in the undercarriage of a stranger's Volvo. They were unable to rescue the cat, who reappeared later in the fire truck’s rear wheel well, The Associated Press reports.
