Tiger Ranch Cat Sanctuary Owner Will Face New Charges
Animal control officers seized hundreds of cats from the Tiger Ranch Cat Sanctuary in March.
The day after a judge dismissed animal cruelty charges against Linda Bruno, owner of Tiger Ranch Cat Sanctuary in Frazer, Pa., the district attorney’s office said it will re-file the existing charges, along with new counts of animal cruelty. With the new counts added to the existing charges, Bruno will face 491 counts of animal cruelty, the Valley News Dispatch (Pennsylvania) reports.

Bruno was charged with 14 counts of animal cruelty last month after the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals raided her 29-acre Tiger Ranch property on March 13 and removed 406 cats. District Judge Suzanne Blaschak ruled that Bruno’s attorney was not provided enough information to file a plea or mount a defense against the charges, and dismissed them on Thursday.

In a news release from the Allegheny County District Attorney Office, spokesman Mike Manko said, “Based on the concern raised … by the magisterial district judge, this office will once again review the materials and re-file the charges in a timely fashion.”

Manko said the district attorney’s office had reviewed the evidence, criminal complaint and affidavit related to Bruno’s arrest. The office will re-file the original 14 counts along with 477 new counts of animal cruelty. Misdemeanor charges will account for 208 of the charges, with 283 of the counts being summary offenses.

The misdemeanors will include one count each for the 106 cats found dead on the Tiger Ranch property, as well as a count for each of the 102 cats that have died or needed to be euthanized after being removed from the property.

Seems to be an all-too-common sad story of somebody who loved animals and started out with good intentions, but then becomes overwhelmed, delusional, ineffecual, and ultimately, cruel. There has to be some way to PREVENT this from happening, before cats and other animals are hoarded in festering slum conditions. Perhaps a LAW against anybody keeping more than five pets, regardless of the size of their property. If fines were really stiff, the money could help take care of the animals abused by violators...... Poor little kitties! Running up to the strangers, that says "Help Me!"

have just found out about this in June 2009 and would like to know when this case comes up. I am a member of CARE2 an internet community that focuses on animal rights among others.

This could be a consciousness raising case in a great many ways-to bring forward the importance of a blanket law providing protection for cats, more stringent oversight of sanctuaries and the awareness for the general public of what can become of animals that are allowed to pro-create because they have not had their cats spayed or neutered-why feral colonies are exploding everywhere and that this incredible avalanche of colonies is due to the failure of people themselves to care enough for their animals to see that those colonies don't explode more than they have.

How did this come about-by the lax laws, the lax pet owners and the economy and the desperation on the part of animal welfare groups everywhere to see that their cats are removed from their books and onto someone else's.

I don't agree with this woman's philosophy-of no euthanasia and allowing animals to die because she thought that was the better way-while they had no quality of life. I don't know this woman so it's hard to say what happened here-I think she tried to save these cats but her program was neither reasonable nor practical. The animals seem to have been just thrown together-sick and well and that was a disaster.

I will be watching this very closely. The animal welfare groups and shelters themselves need to take more responsibility for their own situations. This place seems to have become a warehouse for all manner of cats from everywhere-

In a perfect world it might have been great. In this world-far from perfect there is no such thing. What a horror for these cats. And all those years. It is more than I can comprehend. I reeled from the shock of it and then I saw Bruno-she seems intelligent and caring and overwhelmed and it was all WRONG.

Whether she sat back and let them suffer for her religion or really tried to care for them it was all wrong! She had no right to impose her beliefs on these cats. They had nothing to say about it.I am sure they would much prefer to die with dignity and not in this misery.

As it is I expect most will have to be put down because they are most likely sick beyond saving and highly un-adoptable. What an irony.

It seemed like a concentration camp. As I say I think the world will be watching this case because it has much more to do with what is seen on the surface -it is so far reaching on so many levels that it goes on forever.
