On Saturday, April 21, in the nation’s capital, The Washington Animal Rescue League will host its largest event of the year with a black-tie evening of dinner, dancing and a live auction.

All proceeds raised that evening will support the League’s rescue and rehabilitation work. The live auction includes a jewelry set from Tiffany & Co., an African photo-safari, original artwork, a pet portrait by a Pulitzer Prize winning photographer, a custom-built wine cellar and an Irish country get-away.

The Washington Animal Rescue League specializes in rehabilitating sick and injured homeless animals that other shelters do not have the resources to help.

The fundraiser also serves as a celebration for the league’s new shelter. Last year the Washington Animal Rescue League completed a $4 million renovation of its shelter and medical center, in which the facility was redesigned entirely from the animals’ point of view.

The facility, which promotes the physical, mental and social healing of animals in transition, currently is one of the largest shelters for homeless animals in the country, with as many as 400 cats and dogs in residence at any time.

“Our newly renovated animal shelter — which is really more of a rehabilitation center for homeless animals — has attracted a lot of attention around the area and across the country. We believe it is quite probably the most humane, best designed animal facility in the world,” said Scotlund Haisley, the Washington Animal Rescue League’s executive director.

The 2007 Rescue Me Gala takes place at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, 22nd & M Street, NW, Washington, D.C. For more information, click here.
