Earlier this summer, a volunteer from the Animal Rescue League in Elk Grove, Calif., rescued a cat living under a house. Willy, a young black cat, was suffering from a gunshot wound in his left elbow and had metal shards in his leg and chest. Vets recommended that Willy’s leg be amputated, but the medical bills strained the shelter’s budget.
That’s where American Humane’s Second Chance Fund came in. The animal welfare organization provided a grant to pay for Willy’s medical expenses so the cat would receive all the treatment he needed. Willy made a full recovery and was put up for adoption in late July.
The Second Chance Fund provides financial assistance to animal welfare organizations for the medical costs of treating and rehabilitating abused animals. The goal of the fund is to give animal victims of abuse or neglect pets a second chance at life in a permanent, loving home.
