Before you plant that plant or plate that food, consider the effect they will have on your cat. Several common plants are harmful to cats and many everyday food items can make cats sick. Learn which food of plants are toxic to cats by reviewing this list, below.


Mushrooms According to the University of California, Davis, California Animal Health and Food Safety lab, cats have been diagnosed with Amanita sp. mushroom intoxication. Signs of mushroom toxicity in cats include anorexia, lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea for two days.  CAHFS has confirmed Amanita mushroom intoxication in a number of cases. In addition to offering a test for amanitin, testing for psilocin, one of the hallucinogenic mushroom toxins, found in Psilocybe spp. and several other mushroom genera, can also be performed (urine sample). Utilizing expertise available at UC Davis, mushrooms can also be identified, sometimes from good quality photographs submitted via e-mail.
