Cat Eyes

Red Eyes

Find out what a vet recommends for a cat's red eyes.

Elaine Wexler-Mitchell, D.V.M.

Q. What can I do if my cat's eye is red and squinting?

Elaine Wexler-Mitchell, D.V.M., says: A red, squinting eye is painful, so your cat may be reluctant to have you look at it. If you have saline eye drops available, you can attempt to flush the eye. However, a veterinarian should examine the cat to determine the specific cause. This often requires staining the eye, measuring tear production, applying a topical anesthetic so the eye can be better examined and the lids probed, and using an ophthalmoscope, or special lense, to look at deeper layers of the eye. Conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, ocular foreign bodies, uveitis and trauma are all possible causes. Once your veterinarian determines the cause, he or she can recommend appropriate treatment. Cats tend to rub an uncomfortable eye, which can potentially damage the eye further, so you may need to use a protective Elizabethan collar.

Good info. I have a kitty whose eye waters a lot. He was examined and (he also has the herpes virus as he was adopted from a shelter and was very sick)it was finally determined that he may have a tear duct that never fully formed. I just keep it clean and he is fine. However, you should always have a vets opinion.

This is infomative and helpful with eye problems in cats.My neighbor has a cat around 19 now,and for years this cats eye has been red and running and sometimes a bit of blood comes out with it.She and I keep rubbing it with kleenex and water to keep it clean and we know it feels uncomfortable for him.I even put in antibiotic cream for a cats eye if it gets scratched by the bushes. But being this not the case,it really doesn't work.So the best thing is to seek out a vets opinion.
