Cat Eat

Cat Stops Eating

Find out what a vet recommends if your cat stops eating.

Elaine Wexler-Mitchell, D.V.M.

Q. What does it mean if my cat stops eating?

Elaine Wexler-Mitchell, D.V.M., says: Cats stop eating for a variety of reasons, including an unappetizing diet, dental disease, fever, loss of smell, and stress. Your cat can be in danger if he does not eat for an extended period of time. When your cat does not eat, the fat his body has stored is metabolized to provide energy. Too much fat breakdown damages the liver and leads to another condition called hepatic lipidosis, also known as fatty liver disease.

To tempt your cat to eat, try warming some baby food. Warm food generates an appetizing smell, which should encourage your cat to eat, and baby food is easy for your cat to digest. If your cat does not eat for two days, a veterinarian should examine him as soon as possible.

My cat just had dental surgery (tooth extraction)and is on a liquid antibiotic. He hasn't eaten all day. I can only offer him canned food or soak his dry food. Not sure if it's stress, pain, or doesn't like the new types of soft food. Now I know if he doesn't eat tomorrow that he'll have to go back to the vet.

I am going through this now as I brought home a new kitty Friday night. It has taken some time to get him to warm uo to us and I was getting very concerned about him not eating. I tried everything and finally I would put some smushed food on the top of his paws. He would lick it off of them and then I would do it again. He finally has started eating on his own. Not alot but better than nothing.
