African Golden Cat
African Golden Cat
Profelis aurata

The African golden cat is about double the size of a domestic cat. It lives in the rainforests of West and Central Africa. African golden cats can come in many colors, such as reddish-brown, silver-like gray, black, brown, and a coppery-gold.

While African golden cats are mostly solitary, the male cats are said to take active roles in raising their kittens. Up to three kittens comprise a litter. These cats can live up to 15 years in captivity.

African golden cats prey on rodents, birds and small monkeys, preferring to hunt at night. During the day, these cats like to stay in the trees, as they are excellent climbers. These lifestyle preferences make them elusive and, therefore, African golden cats have rarely been viewed in the wild.

The IUCN currently lists the African golden cat as vulnerable.
